PUBLIC ACCESS (tm) is a front-end control shell for public arena
business and service entities, such as copy centers, public
libraries, community computer resource centers, etc. PUBLIC
ACCESS is meant for any business or service enterprise which rents
or offers the use of their IBM-PC/AT or compatibles to casual,
off-the-street, public users.
PUBLIC ACCESS allows the site to offer their customers and
patrons (the user) controlled access to any text or graphics based
software that the site might wish to support. Most significantly,
the site may for the first time put a modem in their computers
and offer controlled access to the online world of data
communications.
PUBLIC ACCESS comes with an expandable integrated database of
hundreds of the most popular BBS's and online commercial services
in the country. It comes with automated logon procedures (up to 12
steps) for all the online services and allows for the automated
casual access (one time only) to any cooperating online commercial
information providers (Dialog, Bix, GEnie, CompuServe, Dow Jones,
etc). Text based communications are managed through a very
sophisticated interface to Datastorm Technology's PROCOMM PLUS
(PCPLUS) v2.01.
If the site wants to have chargeable services, then they may set rates
by the program or datacomm service, the minute, long distance minute,
printed page, session and/or overall event. The customer or patron may
pay by cash or credit card. Credit card transactions are in accordance
with Master Card Network rules and procedures, and are pre-authorized
prior to use of any of the equipment via the MAPP system. (A modem is
required if the credit card payment feature is chosen.)
No training is required. The user receives a logical progression of
screens, service options and context sensitive help screens to
successfully use the system. The customer receives a nice detailed
receipt when finished.
Registered sites receive a free demo logon password for PRODIGY (does
not support e-mail) and lots of other extras.
Hardware Requirements : IBM-PC/AT-Compatible or better computer,
575k RAM and a hard disk.
Software Requirements : MS-DOS 3.30 or better.
Other Requirements: Sites, wishing to take special advantage of the
credit card feature, must a 1200 baud modem. Sites wishing offer data
communications must have a copy of PROCOMM PLUS v2.01 and a good modem.
